" In the absence
of a plan, the basic philosophy is to get the best deal you can
today".
It's unbelievable
how much "strategic planning" never results in "strategy". Even
when it does, the record shows that more than 70% of all strategies
never get implemented. Even market leaders can adopt self-limiting
mindsets and refuse, wittingly or otherwise, to recognize a "case
for change". The absence of strategy inevitably shows up as warring
silos, functional parochialism, competing initiatives, five-year
forecasts built around the existing business case and disappointing
results.
We have documented
The Challenge of Strategy in Seven Lessons, the first
of which is that:
"The best process
is the one that gives you the most direct confrontation with your
core challenge."
We try
to find our way to that core challenge and design an approach to
developing a robust strategy that's clear and compelling enough
to make things happen.
We also recognize
that strategy exists at every level. We have worked extensively
with corporate and business unit strategy, but have also helped
departments, functions and even key account teams dealing with questions
of how to sell to a low cost provider or how to elevate a function
such as manufacturing or customer service to a competitive advantage.
